San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park - July 18, 2009

ImageLots and lots of walking. Lots. The day was a scorcher, and the park is pretty much in the middle of a desert. We were really proud of the girls for hanging in there with minimal complaining. It helped that they saved some of their spending money specifically for the WAP. We saw some darling (and super-active) baby cheetahs (in the nursery) right off the bat. Awesome. Then we headed for Journey Into Africa, a 25-minute safari ride (with no wait—go early!). It was neat but didn't come close to Disney's Kilimanjaro Safari (even though it was probably more realistic). We saw two year-old male lion cubs that were transitioning from spots to manes. And maybe our favorite part of the day—Elephant Overlook. There were 10 elephants—one huge male, his harem, three young elephants and a baby. After watching them romp and play for 20 minutes or so, we got to see them stampede out into their yard. Very cool experience.
