Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo - July 11, 2009

ImageWe've heard several people say that this zoo is the best in the nation. It just goes to show you that Zoo Ranking, like figure skating, is a subjective sport. We liked the zoo, but I don't think it even made it in our Top Ten. The Desert Dome and Kingdoms of the Night exhibit are probably the most impressive of their kind in the world, but if you're not a fan of desert/nocturnal animals… We enjoyed Lied Jungle, but several zoos have caught up with Omaha on the rainforest front. One of our favorite exhibits was the Orangutan Forest. These intriguing animals were in the mood to entertain and a delight to watch. Don't let our review keep you away though—for someone with different zoo tastes than ours, there's a lot to love about Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo.

Lincoln Park Zoo - June 25, 2009

ImageLincoln Park Zoo is just beautiful—there are no two ways about it. If I lived in Chicago, I'd spend as much time as possible there—visiting the animals, sure, but also reading, writing, dreaming. (And it's free! And right across from the beach!) With the city skyline for a backdrop and beautiful trees, landscaping and architecture, the atmosphere is just incredible—very You've Got Mail-ish. The tiger exhibit was beautiful, and we saw some amazing big, beautiful-eyed cats in the Lion House. Too bad there's not enough room in the zoo for them to all roam and play outside. The Kovler Seal Pool is really pretty, but our favorite part of the day was visiting the polar bear. As we pressed our noses up to the glass of the underwater viewing area, he swam right up to us over and over and over—like he was kissing us through the window. So awesome. Lincoln Park is one of America's best small zoos for sure.

Brookfield Zoo - June 25, 2009

ImageBrookfield has a beautiful zoo with so much to see and do. I'm fairly certain it was our hottest day at a zoo to date. Thank goodness for plenty of shady spots and the misters all over the place that kept us cool. Tropic World was our first stop and one of our favorite parts of the day. You walk along a path at treetop level, like you're at the top of the jungle canopy. We saw all kinds of monkeys and apes—including a couple babies and two squabbling young gorillas. We got to see a cute young giraffe and finally some snow leopards that weren't asleep. The dolphin show was closed for the summer, but we weren't too bummed knowing we'd be at Sea World again in three weeks. We enjoyed the bear grottoes—they had pretty much every kind of bear there is. The new Dinosaur exhibit looked like fun, but we're more into living, breathing animals, so we skipped it. Wiping the sweat from our brows, we happily piled into the van and headed into the city.
