We loved the Philly Zoo. One of our first animal experiences of the day involved Galapagos tortoises mating very loudly. While Gabe busily snapped photos, my friend Sarah and I enjoyed watching red-faced parents scrambling to invent believable explanations (lies) to feed their children. Big Cat Falls is stunning (AZA's 2007 Exhibit of the Year), but most of the cats were asleep by the time we got there—the sun was bright and hot. The cheetahs (who I guess didn't get invited to join the Big Cats), however, were very active and fun to watch. The new McNeil Avian Center is really nice, and the Macaw Show we saw right outside was fascinating. It's amazing what these birds can be trained to do. It's unnerving when they fly centimeters above your head. Other favorites included the polar bears, a mama peacock and all her peachicks, and a giraffe that kept getting his tongue caught in the fence trying to eat forbidden leaves. Two thumbs up for the Philly Zoo!

Manhattan is no Columbus,
Ohio, that's for sure. After a nail-biting 45 minutes, we found ourselves in a
reasonably-priced (relatively speaking) parking garage just a couple blocks
from Central Park. The zoo is tiny but cute. One of the highlights was the sea
lion show. Their rocky exhibit is beautiful and sits smack dab in the middle of
a gorgeous flower garden. My personal favorite was Zeppelin, the baby snow
monkey. We stood and watched him for the longest time. He'd venture a foot or
so from Mom, hop and skip around, then run back to nurse. She'd scoop him up
and carry him from rock to rock, then let him play some more. The new snow
leopard exhibit opened the very day we were there, but the primarily nocturnal
snow leopard was nowhere to be found. After a quick tour of the zoo, we headed
through Central Park and unexpectedly ended up in front of the world-famous
Apple Store. Nice. Apple is to Gabe what giraffes are to Marla. What a
productive day!

The Bronx Zoo is
beautiful—lots of renovated historic buildings, neat architecture, sweet
exhibits. The girls loved the Bug Carousel—as far as I know, it's the only one
of its kind (complete with a dung beetle and pile of poo). The sea lion show
was a good one, and Gabe spent a lot of time shooting pics at Tiger Mountain. While
enjoying a picnic lunch with our friends John, Kim, and Conner, we had a
perfect view of the giraffe habitat. Little months-old baby giraffe Margaret
put on a show, racing around the yard and picking fights with the resident
peacock. The Congo Gorilla Forest is a phenomenal exhibit. So many beautiful
animals and lush landscaping. You watch a short film about gorillas on a huge
screen in a small theater, and then the screen splits in two to reveal…real
gorillas! Heaps of them! Young, old, sleeping, playing, eating, climbing. The
best gorilla exhibit we've ever seen. Then it was off to Central Park—another
two-fer day!
