Sea World San Antonio - April 19, 2009

ImageTwo Sea Worlds down, one to go! We love Sea World! The park is only open Thurs-Sun from 10-6 in April, and not all of the shows are running, but we still had a blast. There wasn’t as much to do as in Orlando, but it was a nice change of pace. Killer whales will never cease to amaze me—Shamu rocks! And the Viva! dolphin show was spectacular. Crazy high divers and aerialists, beluga whales, and Pacific white-sided dolphins (seen only at Sea World San Antonio, I believe). It knocked our socks off. The sea lion show is always funny, and this was a new one we hadn't seen. We got to feed and pet dolphins—what a rush! And I finally got to ride a roller coaster. We met up with a Twitter friend, thanks to the iPhone. Another great day at Sea World!

Houston Zoo - April 18, 2009

ImageUnfortunately, it rained most of the day as we toured the Houston Zoo. The good news? What was supposed to be a super-crowded Earth Day turned into a peaceful, relaxing Saturday. The rain didn't dampen our spirits for a minute! The Houston Zoo wins the prize for Most Generous Zoo hands-down. They gave us free admission, 6 carousel rides, $72 worth of food coupons(!!) and a stuffed red panda for each of the girls. Wowzers! Houston has a beautiful zoo—lush foliage, beautiful exhibits, lots of fountains. Baby giraffe! Baby elephant! Okapi (including a male with horns)! Sea Lions! And we usually pack our own lunch, but we sure aren't going to turn down free food! The pizza was scrumptious. We had an awesome day. You know a zoo is great when you love it in the rain!

Caldwell Zoo - April 17, 2009

ImageThe sky looked ominous when we got to the zoo in Tyler, so we were thankful for its small size. What it lacks in acreage, it makes up for in beauty. What a pretty little zoo! Waterfalls, beautiful flowers everywhere, gorgeous trees. And the employees were super friendly. From the guy directing traffic (Jim) to the college kid in the ticket booth (Sam) to the folks in the office, everyone was excited to see us and to hear about our big adventure. Lions, elephants, giraffes, bongos, meerkats, rhinos—lots of variety for a small zoo. Our favorite animals were the white tigers—a brother/sister pair. The female (Meka) has almost no stripes. Crazy! We made it through the entire zoo in record time (while still enjoying all the animals). We ran to our van, the claps of thunder getting louder and louder, and just as we were putting our stroller away, the rain came pouring down. Exquisite timing.
