Dallas Zoo - April 16, 2009

ImageWe were told by several people that we were absolutely crazy to attempt both Fort Worth and Dallas in the same day. That may be true, but we did it anyway. And survived! It helped that the first thing we did at the Dallas Zoo that afternoon was hop on the monorail (thanks for the free tickets, DZ!). What a great way to see a lot of animals without using any energy! Our safari guide was quite perky and kept us from being lulled to sleep by the smooth monorail ride. More okapi (and lots of other animals). The girls enjoyed the children's zoo—lots of stuff to climb on. They also got to crawl underground and see hornbills and pygmy mongooses (mongeese?), and they petted a rabbit and a guinea pig. We rode the carousel five times—the zoo was awfully generous with their ride tickets. It was a quiet afternoon at the zoo, a perfect way to end our big 2-fer day.

Fort Worth Zoo - April 16, 2009

ImageFort Worth wins the title of Our Favorite Zoo in Texas. Easily in the top three or four zoos we've been too so far. We picked a popular day to visit—1500 school-aged kids were at the zoo on field trips. But it's big, so there was room for all of us. The zoo is beautiful—much like Tampa, the foliage is lush and green and never sparse. We loved the giraffes—and had fun watching a unique encounter between a giraffe and a turtle. The apes were amazing—their exhibits were wonderful. The rhino had his own waterfall and pool. He was standing under it like he was at a spa. We caught some spindly gerenuks standing upright, eating leaves out of trees. Amazing creatures! And Fort Worth's Texas exhibit is massive—we joked that only in Texas would a state exhibit be bigger than all of Africa. There is much, much, much to love about the Fort Worth Zoo!

Oklahoma City Zoo - April 15, 2009

ImageYou know you're not in Ohio when security officers at the zoo are wearing cowboy hats. We started off our OKC zoo tour with a lot of fish, birds and reptiles—not our favorite creatures—but the big, furry animals came soon enough. Bears, red pandas, okapi (always a treat!), giraffes, zebras, lots of antelope. The meerkats were active—scurrying to and fro with their little meerkat agendas. Gorillas, orangutans, chimps. Lots of big cats—lions, jaguars, snow leopards, tigers. The Sumatran tiger was one of the most stunning animals we've ever seen—gorgeous eyes, sharply contrasting stripes. Awesome. The weather was beautiful and the company delightful. Great day!
