Sedgwick County Zoo - July 22, 2009

ImageWe met up with my cousin Katherine, her husband Matt, and their five kids at the zoo, so we had quite the entourage. The kids had a blast running around to all the exhibits together—brought back some fuzzy childhood memories. We loved the orangutans and chimpanzees—some of their antics had us adults giggling and snickering like little kids. The penguin exhibit is really nice (but smelly, as all penguin exhibits are). We got to feed giraffes (never gets old), and Gabe got some great shots of a not-very-old baby. The Tiger Trek is a new exhibit that's very pretty. We got there in time to watch them feed the tigers humongous chunks of raw meat—fascinating if not appetizing. We really enjoyed this charming zoo!

Phoenix Zoo - July 20, 2009

ImagePhoenix is a place that normal people visit in February, not July. We Ohioans weren't used to triple-digit temps—especially not 115 degrees! Honestly, we got in and out of the zoo as quickly as we could—without skipping anything. Our favorite exhibit, hands-down, was Monkey Village. Imagine tons of adorable little squirrel monkeys roaming free, swinging from tree to tree, scampering across tight ropes--right over your head! It was too much fun. We've never seen anything like it! We also got to feed giraffes—always a hoot. Their giraffe feeding exhibit is fairly new, so the docents were still getting used to the whole procedure. They were surprised to meet our girls who are old pros at feeding giraffe-folk. We loved sharing our Zoo Story with everybody. If you have plans to visit the Phx Zoo, may we suggest the winter months?

Los Angeles Zoo - July 19, 2009

ImageIt's tough being a zoo so close to San Diego, but LA seems to be holding its own. They have a lot of neat animals and some cool new exhibits. We enjoyed watching a massive hippo, a majestic lion, and some fun gorillas. The highlight of our day, though, was most definitely the chimpanzees. I don't know that we've ever seen a more entertaining troop of chimps. They had divided up into two gangs (seriously—they were even flashing gang signs!) and chased each other, hit each other with sticks, and screamed at each other. Then they'd sit and pout for awhile and then start up again. We hated to leave their exhibit because we didn't want to miss any fun! Apes are fascinating creatures!
