Our first zoo on a 9-zoos-in-10-days Tour! Whew! A feature writer from the Tulsa World met as when the zoo opened and did a fun story on our adventure. Our first animal encounter was with the chimps. One little guy put on quite a show for us—diving and rolling all over the place. We saw our first collared peccaries, got a huge whiff of a male porcupine marking his territory, and enjoyed the mean-looking African Café Buffalo, a rare find at zoos. The rainforest exhibit was a highlight. The pygmy marmosets roamed free, which was a first for us. And the poison dart frog exhibit is barrier-free. I really wanted to touch one, but I didn't want to die (or get a hand slap from the docent). We toured the zoo with two new friends and four of their kiddos. A great start to our big Spring Zoo Run!

Beside the fact that we were exhausted and that we missed Diego (!), the Miami Zoo was great. It's huge, so we walked a lot, but so many big animals! My cousin Kelly accompanied us on our tour, and we had too much fun. Our first stop was the pelicans—we fed them frozen fish. A first for us! Lots of tigers, elephants, giraffes, zebras, bears, big cats, and just about every kind of antelope you could ever imagine (and several kinds you couldn't). Wow. The smart people rented Safari Cycles, but we walked the entire 3+ mile zoo. The girls did great, and the "Cool Zone" misters helped a lot (as did my supply of Swedish fish and Red Vines). It was a great end to our Florida Zoo Tour.

Quite possibly our favorite. The Kilimanjaro Safari Ride (which we did 2x, thanks to the Fast Pass) is the closest thing to a real African safari we've ever experienced. Bongos, okapi, kudu, elands, tons of hippos, rhinos (right by our vehicle!), lions, ostriches, elephants. Oh, it made me crave Africa! The only animal we didn't see were giraffes (the next time we did though!). We saw some huge silverback gorillas in a beautiful tropical setting. Saw a Broadway-quality Lion King show, the 3D It's Tough to be a Bug show, and met a bunch of fun Disney characters. A high school friend of Gabe's (and Disney employee) volunteered to be our tour guide for the day (and got us in free!). What a huge blessing. We're Animal Kingdom fans for life!
