Jacksonville Zoo - December 27, 2008

ImageThe day after Christmas, we put our tree out by the curb, packed up our van and headed to sunny Florida. It was 80 degrees and sunny all week—delightful. Besides the glorious weather, highlights of the J-ville Zoo included petting stingrays, the squirrel monkey exhibit with 20 little yellow-faced monkeys flying and jumping around, the sea otters that swam over our heads, the piggy-backing bonobos, some beautiful bongos, and the sleek, powerful jaguars. Did you know that black jaguars are covered with spots (you can see them when the sun shines)? We topped off our first Florida zoo with a surprise trip to a nice beach in Jacksonville. Collected shells, waded in the cold water, and praised God for His awesome creation.

Zoo Atlanta - December 12, 2008

ImageThe highlight of Zoo Atlanta were the giant pandas. Only four zoos have them (Memphis, D.C., San Diego). We'd never seen any in real life. They're beautiful. It was another cold day, but the zoo was filled with kids on field trips. Our girls enjoyed petting the goats, sheep and pigs. And riding the carousel and train. We saw three lion cubs with their mama and a beautiful clouded leopard. The crazy naked mole rats were a hit, scurrying around, obeying their underground queen. Atlanta has an amazing group of gorillas and orangutans, but they were off exhibit due to the cold weather. We had to stop back by the pandas to say good-bye before our 9-hour drive home.

Montgomery Zoo - December 11, 2008

ImageWe started our day in Birmingham and ended it in Montgomery. It was cold, cold, cold (and rained part of the day), but we really loved the Montgomery Zoo. We were greeted at the entrance by a super-nice zoo guy. He had a Christmas basket for us with stuffed rhinos, candy canes and a free meal! The animal habitats were all beautiful. Waterfalls and such. We loved the white tigers. And the cheetahs. And we got photos of a male and female lion play-fighting. Africa was our favorite spot. We watched the giraffes and zebras, antelopes and pygmy hippos for the longest time. Our favorite animal was Makena, a month-old elephant. The zoo also has a taxidermy museum—it's phenomenal. All sorts of dead animals from North America. The girls were especially impressed with the gigantic polar bears. We had a great day in Montgomery!
