Birmingham Zoo - December 11, 2008

ImageI'm not sure why we thought all these southern zoos would be warm and toasty in December. Actually it wasn't too cold in Birmingham, but it was rainy. And we were the only ones at the zoo! We loved the giraffes, especially baby girl Willow. And the ostriches, who followed behind the giraffes, eating their poo! The alligators were thinking about hibernating, but their heads were still sticking up out of their neon green, goopy swamp. We saw the orangutans—well, sort of. They were all wrapped up in blankets with their backs to us. The sea lions were cool. We didn't catch their show, but the trainer came out and had them do some fun tricks for us. The zoo is small but cute.

Knoxville Zoo - November 23, 2008

ImageThe weather was a little bit warmer in Knoxville, so we got to see most of the animals. Black Bear Falls is the first exhibit you see when you enter the zoo, and it's great. Four big, black bears walking around—you could see their breath! The Red Panda Village was neat. We saw six of them—that's the most we've ever seen at a single zoo. Six lions too—that's a lot. Our favorite part of the zoo was George, the four-month-old chimpanzee. He was soooo cute! We got to see his mama nurse him. And his toddling antics cracked us up. Our littlest one was sick (fever/cold) and fell asleep before the end of the zoo, but she (and we!) still had a great time.

Nashville Zoo at Grassmere - November 22, 2008

ImageWe weren't expecting it to be quite so chilly in Tennessee. It was 35 degrees, so sadly, a lot of the animals were off-exhibit. We hope to go back sometime when it's warmer. It's such a beautiful zoo. We saw a red panda, zebras, elands, and ostriches. Cougars, lynxes and two colors of tigers. It was too cold for the elephants and giraffes—we missed them. One of the girls' favorite parts of the zoo was The Jungle Gym—a 66,000 square-foot playground. It more than made up for the animals we didn't get to see. Huge slides, a jumping/bouncy pit, swings, mazes. Great fun!
