My sister and her husband live minutes away from this zoo, so it was a special treat to stay with them and go to the zoo together. Our two favorite experiences—seeing five lion cubs that were just four months old and feeding lettuce to the giraffes. The lions had two different mamas—one was an only child, the others were a litter of four born via c-section. The giraffes were hungry, and we loved feeding them. Hand-feeding a giraffe never, ever gets old. We touched a Galapagos tortoise—his shell, his feet, his toenails. The hippo exhibit was boarded up, and we found out later he had died. It was a gorgeous, cool day and oodles of fun.

The NC Zoo is known for its expansive, naturalistic habitats. You don't always get to see the animals close up, but you do feel like you're in Africa. One highlight was the gorilla that defecated in his hand and then ate it. Four times. Our girlies went wide-eyed over a well-endowed elephant bull. And we had fun with some new friends and two family members. Our favorites were the grizzly bear, the giraffes, the cougar, the chimpanzees and the baboons. It was our first rainy day at a zoo, but it sure didn't spoil our fun.

Our favorite part of the Cincy Zoo was the new Giraffe Feeding Deck. The girls got to feed them for free. We got to see three baby red river hogs and a baby takin. Cincinnati is considered the "sexiest" zoo for their exceptionally good fortune in breeding animals. We saw some mating monkeys and the world's biggest pile of elephant poo. The gorillas were amazing—a huge silverback male, a nursing mama, even a pregnant gorilla! We made it to one of the last Cheetah Encounters of the season and saw two cheetahs running at top speed—quite wild.
