We stayed in Evansville with a couple we've never met. They were incredible. Granny packed us a delicious lunch, and she and her granddaughter accompanied us to the zoo. Our favorite exhibit, by far, was the brand-spankin'-new Amazonia. Adorable, hyper-active monkeys, a big, sleek, chocolate brown tapir, two capybaras, brilliant scarlet ibises, and a gorgeous jaguar. We rode flamingo paddleboats across a huge lake until our legs went numb. We watched a giraffe choke on a rock (or so we thought). He ended up spitting it out. Whew. Old zoo, fun times.

We toured the fabulous Toledo Zoo in a party of 12—our family of five, two blog friends, one hubby, and four little boys. The highlight of the day was Gabe sitting on a swarm of ants and picking them out of his shorts the rest of the day. We saw a tiny baby langur monkey, some massive hippos, playful polar bears, white lions, gorgeous giraffes, orangutans, lions, tigers, gorillas, elephants, rhinos, zebras, and chimpanzees. It was the most complete zoo we've visited yet. "Was there any big animal we didn't see?" I asked Livi as we were leaving. Her answer? "I didn't see any sloths." Right. The mighty sloth. Darn that sloth-less Toledo Zoo.

We met a college pal and her kiddos at the zoo before spending the night at their house. The girls were excited to see rhinos up and moving around, even running. We normally catch them napping. These two stared us down, pawed the ground, and looked like they wanted to impale us. We fed giraffes (Raspberry, Chardo and Ajax were their names) and watched some X-rated gorilla fondling. The Arctic Ring of Life is one of the best polar bear exhibits anywhere, but unfortunately, all the bears were snoozing. We had so hoped to walk under a swimming polar bear in Polar Passage, a 70-foot glass tunnel. Maybe next time!
