San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park - July 18, 2009

ImageLots and lots of walking. Lots. The day was a scorcher, and the park is pretty much in the middle of a desert. We were really proud of the girls for hanging in there with minimal complaining. It helped that they saved some of their spending money specifically for the WAP. We saw some darling (and super-active) baby cheetahs (in the nursery) right off the bat. Awesome. Then we headed for Journey Into Africa, a 25-minute safari ride (with no wait—go early!). It was neat but didn't come close to Disney's Kilimanjaro Safari (even though it was probably more realistic). We saw two year-old male lion cubs that were transitioning from spots to manes. And maybe our favorite part of the day—Elephant Overlook. There were 10 elephants—one huge male, his harem, three young elephants and a baby. After watching them romp and play for 20 minutes or so, we got to see them stampede out into their yard. Very cool experience.

Sea World San Diego - July 17, 2009

ImageRanking Sea Worlds is a whole lot easier than ranking zoos, since there are only three of them. In our book, San Diego ranks a solid second after Orlando. We got there right when they opened and headed straight for the sea lions. We promised the girls they could feed dolphins, but you can't do that in SD. Later on, my contact at the park took us on an unexpected Behind-the-Scenes tour where we got to see baby dolphins and pet/feed a couple mama dolphins. It. Was. Awesome. We also saw a bunch of juvenile sea lions that have been rescued. And the very rare (in captivity) Commerson's dolphins. The shows are always great—and most of them were different from ones we've seen so far. Our favorite show was the Dolphin Pyrotechnic Show at night. Dolphins, lights, fire, water—what could be better? Besides the fact that none of the seating areas have any shade (we all got burnt), we had an incredible day!

San Diego Zoo - July 16, 2009

ImageIf only I had a dollar for every time we've been asked if the San Diego Zoo lived up to the hype. Our answer? Yes. And no. The zoo really is impressive. More animals than you can count. We did the double-decker bus tour—twice—which saved us a lot of walking time. My two favorite animals were babies—an okapi (the littlest we've seen) and a gorilla. And we've now seen all the giant pandas that live in the U.S. We heard rumors that the viewing line can be really long during their scheduled play time, so we caught them while they were napping. The koala exhibit was amazing—we've never seen that many koalas all in one place. The girls kept losing count around 20. We enjoyed the monkeys and apes. Their exhibits are beautiful. The whole zoo is really lush and tropical. The sky ride is fine, but you can't see many animals from it. Overall? Great zoo but probably not our favorite.
