This zoo is small-ish, very pretty and nestled right down in the midst of some beautiful mountains. We started off our day with the elephant show. The Elephant Encounter exhibit is fairly new and quite impressive. Lots of room for the elephants to roam and have fun. One elephant was due to have a baby any second—we could see her little one squirming around inside her. The highlight of our day was watching little Acara, the four-year-old orangutan. We were the only ones around, but she showed off for us like we were a crowd of thousands. We watched her for a good 15 minutes, until she'd exhausted every trick in her repertoire. We ended our day in the beautiful Asian Highlands, a replica Himalayan village. Most of the big cats were taking their afternoon nap, but the Amur leopard woke up and posed for several pictures. Fun day at a lovely zoo.

I really only need one word for this post: giraffes. I know they had other animals at this zoo, but I'll admit—I had a one-track mind. We got a late start and missed the giraffes stampeding out into their yard, but we had plenty of interaction with them when we got there. A delightful guy named Sean (PR Director) took us on a VIP golf cart tour of the zoo. Then we all hopped out at African Rift Valley. I was prepared to feed giraffes until my money ran out, but Sean surprised us with All-we-could-feed giraffe crackers—for free! I was in heaven. Just think of it—twenty giraffes all wanting to be my best friend. If I remember correctly, we saw a couple elephants, a handful of monkeys, and a moose maybe? But I only had eyes for the giraffes.

Our first stop at the zoo was Predator Ridge—a new exhibit featuring the King of Beasts. The lions were sawing logs when we got there, but gave us a little show (ahem) later that afternoon. We enjoyed the sea lion show, and polar bears are always fun. Lots and lots of monkeys and apes. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and Alaskan Dall sheep are two animals we don't see that often. The girls used part of their "California Money" on Denver Zoo mist sprayer/fans—a great investment because the rest of our trip got nothing but hotter. We enjoyed the Denver Zoo, and touring it with our new friends Jill, Ashlyn and Lily made it that much more fun.
